Disease Overview:rare bleeding disorder-deficiency of coagulation Factor XI impairs blood clotting process. [more info]
Signs and Symptoms:prolonged bleeding after injuries, surgeries, procedures; menstrual bleeding; spontaneous bleeding (less common) [more info]
Diagnosis:Specific blood tests to measure Factor XI levels and assess the clotting function [more info]
Treatment:Preventative: recombinant factor XI replacement. Acute: TXA for minor bleeds, FFP for more significant bleeds [more info]
Clinical Management:Treatment is usually reserved for those with a history of bleeding or prior to surgeries or dental procedures. Regular monitoring of Factor XI levels.
Referral:Center for Blood Disorders, Weill Cornell Medicine, and other treatment centers for hemophilia. Referral to Medical Genetics Department, if available. TeleRare Health for virtual care and consults is also recommended.
